You might want to cross a few things off your grocery list before the next time you head to the store.
Overall inflation increased by 8.3% between April 2021 and this April, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.
That 12-month increase is a smidge better than it was in March, when it reached 8.5%. But that is likely of little consolation to shoppers at the grocery store.
Grocery prices as a whole rose 10.8% between April 2021 and April 2022 — the largest 12-month increase since 1980.
Prices for meats, poultry, fish and eggs collectively increased by a whopping 14.3% during the same period — the largest 12-month increase for this food group since 1979. And some specific grocery items are jumping in price at a pace never seen before.
